Description

Declared a Heritage Town for its beauty and cultural value, Mompox is one of the most authentic corners of Colombia. Walking through its streets transports visitors to the colonial past and to the magical universe of Nobel laureate Gabriel García Márquez. This city, so close to Macondo, evokes the atmosphere of One Hundred Years of Solitude. A place where reality and fiction merge, it offers spaces to explore and share. Its name comes from the indigenous chief Mompoj, of the Malibú people, and it has been known as Mompós since the 18th century.

ITINERARY

Day 1. Mompox – Arrival Transfer
Day 1. Mompox – Arrival Transfer

Assistance at the airport and transfer to the hotel by motorcycle taxi.

Transfer from the hotel to Plaza de la Concepción to board La Valerosa, which departs at 16:30. This is a 2-hour and 20-minute journey along a branch of the Magdalena River (the Mompox branch), sailing upstream toward a town called Troncosito, Magdalena. Mompox’s infrastructure can be observed from a different perspective, and along the route there is birdwatching of migratory and local species such as herons, kingfishers, cormorants, among others. A beautiful sunset is enjoyed, with a colorful sky reflected on the river. On the return to the city, Mompox is seen at night, admiring the illuminated albarrada of Mompox—an image that will remain in your memories and make your visit to Mompox unforgettable. Arrival at the pier and return to the hotel on your own, walking. We suggest continuing to enjoy the Momposina night with a tasting at La Isla craft brewery and sharing some appetizers.

Day 2. Mompox – City Tour
Day 2. Mompox – City Tour

Breakfast at the hotel. At the scheduled time, a visit will be made to the Wamaris filigree workshops, where the process of making jewelry using this technique is shown, and where visitors can appreciate the materials and the tradition that has been preserved to this day; each piece is unique. Free time for lunch.

At 14:00, after the sun has gone down a bit, we will begin our tour by motorcycle taxi to reach the Church of Santa Bárbara, where we will start a walk along the albarrada to see the stone with the dates of Bolívar’s visits, the Minor Basilica of the Most Holy Christ, the Portales de la Marquesa, until arriving at Café 1700 to enjoy a granita-style coffee (direct payment at the restaurant).

At 15:00, a canoe will be boarded to tour the Pijiño marsh, located in one of the branches of the Magdalena River. During the journey, an immersive experience with the area’s nature will be enjoyed. It is possible to see different species of riverside birds such as herons; birds like the kingfisher or the yellow-hooded blackbird (Chrysomus icterocephalus); palmipeds such as the cormorant; and reptiles like the iguana and the spectacled caiman, a species native to South American rivers. This will be a relaxing ecotourism experience with plenty of learning. In the evening, we suggest dinner at Santa Coa Restaurant, specializing in seafood—a gastronomic concept wrapped in the history and magic of the City of God.

PROGRAM DETAILS

How to Get to Mompox – By Air

Mompox is served by San Bernardo de Mompox Airport (MMP), located just a few minutes from the town center, allowing quick and convenient access to the city. Currently, the main air connection is from Medellín, operated by regional airlines such as SATENA, with direct flights from Olaya Herrera Airport (EOH).

The Medellín – Mompox flight has an approximate duration of 1 hour and 10 to 15 minutes, making this route the fastest and most efficient way to reach the destination. These flights generally operate on specific days of the week, so it is recommended to check availability and schedules in advance.

Additionally, Mompox can be accessed by air from other cities through connecting routes, mainly by first flying to Cartagena, Montería, or Bogotá, and then continuing the journey by land.

How to Get to Mompox – By Land

For land access from Cartagena to Mompox, the road journey takes approximately 5 to 6 hours, whether by intercity bus, door-to-door transportation service, or private vehicle. This is one of the most commonly used routes by both domestic and international tourists.

From Barranquilla or Santa Marta, travel time is similar, ranging between 5 and 6 hours, depending on the type of service and road conditions. From Medellín, the overland journey is longer, with an estimated duration of 10 to 12 hours, and may include connections in intermediate cities.

River Transport and Combined Routes

A traditional and very authentic way to reach Mompox is by combining land and river transportation. Many travelers first arrive in Magangué, an important port on the Magdalena River. From there, they take a river boat (chalupa or ferry) for an approximately 30 to 45-minute ride to the La Bodega area or nearby docks, followed by a short land transfer to the historic center of Mompox.

Additional Practical Information

Mompox is a peaceful destination with growing tourism infrastructure, yet it still preserves a traditional character. For this reason, it is recommended to carry cash, as not all establishments accept credit cards. The city is ideal for walking, enjoying a relaxed pace, and connecting with its history. It is advisable to plan activities without rushing and to respect local schedules, especially during the hottest hours of the day.

TRAVEL PROGRAM CLARIFICATIONS:

1. In the event that the selected hotel is unavailable at the time of booking, a hotel of similar category and rate will be reserved.

2. Check-in time is from 3:00 p.m.

3. Check-out time is before 12:00 p.m.

4. Triple room accommodation is requested as a twin room, with two double beds. One of the guests must share a bed.

TRAVEL INSURANCE IS ESSENTIAL

At the time of purchasing the travel package, we recommend including travel insurance that provides coverage in case of illness, COVID-19 infection, accidents, loss of luggage, protection of goods and valuables, cancellation, etc.

REMINDER

Passengers traveling on domestic flights must arrive at the airport 2 hours and 30 minutes prior to the scheduled departure time.

It is not recommended to drink tap water. Please use bottled water for personal consumption.

ITINERARY CHANGES:

• In the event that, prior to the departure of the trip, DORADO EXPERIENCES is required to modify any essential service of the program, the agency and the traveler will be immediately informed.

• Changes due to mandatory modifications to the itinerary may result in price variations in cases of force majeure or unforeseen circumstances before or during the trip, such as accidents, strikes, weather conditions, earthquakes, among others.

• Any changes to flights and connections must be informed at least 48 hours in advance and during business hours for service verification.

• If the tourist arrives on a different flight or at a different time than previously notified, and a No Show occurs for the first service, an additional charge will apply and must be previously authorized by the contracting agency.

CANCELLATIONS:

• Program cancellations will depend on the reserved season and are subject to each hotel’s policies. Generally, in low season, cancellations must be made 15 days prior to the service date to avoid penalties.

• In cases of No Show, 100% of the service value will be charged based on the confirmed number of passengers.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION:

Santa Cruz de Mompox is located in the department of Bolívar, in northern Colombia, on an island formed by the Mompox branch of the Magdalena River. It sits at approximately 16 meters above sea level, which explains its warm, humid, and tropical climate throughout the year.

Due to its climate conditions, visitors are advised to bring very light and breathable clothing, preferably made of cotton or linen, as well as a hat or cap, sunscreen, and insect repellent. Temperatures typically range between 28°C and 35°C (82°F to 95°F), with a high heat index, especially at midday. Comfortable footwear is also recommended, as many visits are conducted on foot through the historic center.
